Happy St. Paddy's from the Land of No Irish People

HAPPY (Belated) ST. PATRICK'S DAY FROM SAIPAN!  We hope you all had a great celebration!  Ours was pretty good....

As wonderful as this island experience is, there are obviously many things we miss (family/friends, Mexican food, and live music, in that order).  We also miss everything that is Irish.  It may be hard to believe, but for whatever reason no one here in Saipan really cares about being Irish.  Truly baffles me.  I recall joking with someone before moving here that if we ever feel down or miss home, we should go find an Irish bar because surely there's an Irish bar on the island...there are Irish bar everywhere!  Not the case in Saipan.

But credit must be given to our accommodating local bars for making an effort (especially because they had to deal with us Irish snobs).  On the day of St. Paddy's, our favorite beach bar boasted specials including Guinness, Irish cocktails, and corned beef and cabbage.  We strapped on our green and headed down to find the Guinness they shipped in had gone bad on arrival, and the Irish cocktails were basically Mai Tais with green food coloring!  A noble effort nonetheless.

So, Colleen and I took it upon ourselves to show these non-Irish folks what St. Patrick's Day is all about.  Dressed in some loud gear (thank you Moms and Sisters), Colleen whipped up some amazing shepard's pie, homemade scones, and whiskey bread pudding, I found the only bottle of Jameson on the island (no Guinness though...), we turned up the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem playlist and had ourselves a party!  Turns out even the non-Irish enjoy great food, music, and drink!  Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!  Slainte!
